“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”
- Maya Angelou
This quote from Maya Angelou may ring true for the many donors who have given so generously to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) over the years. In my experience, it is especially true for those who have given thoughtful and careful attention to the legacy they wish to create in their lifetime and beyond. To date, more than 400 donors have chosen to remember MUSC in their charitable estate plan. Collectively, their commitment represents $235 million in future support for medical education, research and comprehensive health care. Without these amazing donors who have chosen to invest in MUSC’s future, we would not be able to change what’s possible in health care!
Donors who have helped plan for MUSC’s future, like Dan and Pat Hartley, are recognized as members of the MUSC Legacy Society. The Hartleys’ generosity is designed to lift others up. They created the Dan and Patricia Hartley Scholarship through a charitable gift in their estate plan. The scholarship will primarily support James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine students who intend to practice dentistry in a rural community. Their legacy encompasses giving in their lifetime and beyond so that rural South Carolina has access to the excellence of care our dentists provide.
